ZIWI Peak vs Feline Natural — both NZ-made, both premium, both excellent. We compare ingredients, price, convenience, and nutrition to find which is better for your cat.
The short version
ZIWI Peak is the better pick for most NZ cat owners. Air-dried, ready to serve, no prep required, widely available, and roughly half the daily cost of Feline Natural. The ingredient quality is outstanding and the convenience is unbeatable.
Feline Natural is the better pick if you’re committed to raw feeding philosophy and want maximum nutrition density. Freeze-dried raw with higher protein, included tripe, and high moisture content when rehydrated — at a significant price premium and with regular stock reliability issues.
Both are NZ-made. Both are excellent. The decision mostly comes down to whether you want to add water to your cat’s dinner and whether you can absorb a $6–11/day cost difference.

Pricing in NZ: Side by Side
For an average 4–5kg adult cat in 2026:
| ZIWI Peak (exclusive) | Feline Natural (exclusive) |
|---|
| Daily cost | $4–6 | $12–17 |
| Monthly cost | $120–180 | $360–510 |
| Annual cost | $1,460–2,190 | $4,380–6,200 |
| Mixed with kibble (as topper) | $0.80–1.20/day | $3–4/day |
The gap is stark. Feline Natural costs two to three times more per day to feed exclusively. As a topper over quality kibble, both are more accessible — but the Feline Natural premium persists even in that mode.
Where to buy:
- ZIWI Peak: Animates, Petstock, Pet Direct, Pet Circle (wide availability)

Ingredients compared
Lamb, lamb heart, lamb liver, lamb tripe, lamb kidney, lamb bone, New Zealand green mussel, lamb cartilage, inulin, minerals, vitamins.
Feline Natural Beef Feast
Beef (including heart, lung, liver, kidney, tripe) 85%, beef blood 10%, ground bone 2%, New Zealand green mussel 2%, lecithin 1%.
Both lists are clean. No grains, no plant protein concentrates, no artificial preservatives. The notable shared feature is NZ green mussel in both recipes — a natural source of glucosamine, chondroitin, and omega-3 fatty acids.
Key ingredient differences:
1. Tripe. Both actually include tripe — ZIWI Peak lamb includes lamb tripe in the ingredient list, and Feline Natural’s beef recipe lists tripe as part of the beef organ component. Feline Natural’s tripe inclusion is more consistently featured across its range. Tripe contains natural digestive enzymes and probiotics, and owners often report digestive benefits when switching to tripe-containing foods.
2. Blood and bone ratio. Feline Natural includes beef blood (10%) and ground bone (2%) as separate listed components. ZIWI Peak incorporates bone naturally through the whole-prey approach. Feline Natural’s explicit bone content can occasionally cause constipation in cats who aren’t drinking enough water.
3. Vegetables. Neither includes significant plant matter — both are almost entirely animal-derived, which is appropriate for obligate carnivores.
4. Moisture approach. ZIWI’s air-drying process results in 14% moisture in the finished product. Feline Natural’s freeze-drying locks in nutrients and rehydrates to approximately 72% moisture. The rehydration process means Feline Natural delivers something closer to a cat’s natural prey moisture level.
Winner: Draw. Both use clean, appropriate ingredients with excellent provenance. The processing method and moisture approach differ, but neither is objectively superior on ingredients alone.
Nutritional comparison
| Nutrient | ZIWI Peak (dry matter) | Feline Natural (dry matter) |
|---|
| Protein | 44–48% | ~50% |
| Fat | ~24% | ~17% |
| Carbohydrates | <2% | <2% |
| Moisture (as-fed) | 14% | 72% (rehydrated) |
Both far exceed AAFCO minimum protein requirements for cats (26% DM). The protein difference between the two brands is small in real terms — your cat benefits enormously from either compared to standard kibble.
The fat difference is more notable. ZIWI’s 24% fat (DM) is higher than Feline Natural’s 17%. This makes ZIWI slightly more calorie-dense per gram, which matters for portion control — especially for indoor or less active cats prone to weight gain.
Moisture is where Feline Natural holds a genuine advantage. Cats evolved as desert animals with low thirst drive and are often chronically underhydrated on dry or air-dried food. Feline Natural’s 72% moisture when rehydrated is much closer to what cats consume in prey. For cats with a history of urinary issues or kidney concerns, this matters — though you can also address ZIWI’s moisture gap by adding water or mixing with wet food.
A note on senior cats: Both foods are very high in protein. For cats showing early kidney decline, both brands should be used with veterinary guidance. Neither is a suitable sole diet for a cat on a low-protein therapeutic prescription.
Winner: Feline Natural — on pure nutritional density and moisture content that suits feline physiology. But the margin is smaller than the price gap would suggest.
Convenience and preparation
ZIWI Peak is air-dried. Open bag, measure, serve. The texture is dense and slightly chewy — somewhere between jerky and concentrated dry food. No refrigeration required mid-serve, no timing requirements, no prep. You can portion it into a bowl and leave for scheduled feeding. Auto-feeder compatible.
Feline Natural is freeze-dried. Every meal you measure out the dry crumble, add warm water, and wait 3–5 minutes for rehydration before serving. Rehydrated food needs to be consumed within 2 hours at room temperature, or refrigerated and used within 24 hours. You cannot leave it down all day. It is not compatible with auto-feeders. If you have a cat-sitter, they need to follow the rehydration process correctly or you’ll get an over-watered or under-watered bowl.
For busy households, single-cat owners who travel, multi-pet households, or anyone using an auto-feeder, the ZIWI advantage here is meaningful and daily.
Winner: ZIWI Peak — no preparation required is a genuine practical advantage for most households.
Flavour range
ZIWI Peak cat food recipes:
- Lamb
- Beef
- Venison
- Mackerel & Lamb
- Free-Range Chicken
Plus a canned wet food range in the same proteins, and air-dried cat treats.
Feline Natural freeze-dried recipes:
- Beef Feast
- Lamb Feast
- Chicken Feast
- Venison Feast
- Beef & Hoki
- Rabbit & Lamb
Feline Natural actually offers more freeze-dried flavour variety, including Rabbit & Lamb and the fish-forward Beef & Hoki. However, ZIWI Peak’s Mackerel & Lamb is a useful option for owners wanting a fish protein alongside the standard land-animal proteins.
For allergy elimination diets, both offer single-protein options across beef, lamb, chicken, and venison. The overlap is strong, and neither brand has a clear advantage for food trial purposes.
Winner: Feline Natural — slightly wider freeze-dried variety, though ZIWI’s canned wet food range and treat range add breadth that partially offsets this.
Availability in NZ
ZIWI Peak is at Animates, Petstock, Pet Direct, Pet Circle, and many independent pet stores across New Zealand. You can walk in on a Saturday and buy it from most major pet retailers without planning ahead.
Feline Natural is primarily online — Pet Direct is the main NZ source, with Animates stocking it in selected (not all) stores, and specialty pet stores rounding out availability. Critically, the 320g bags regularly go on backorder at major NZ retailers. If your cat eats only Feline Natural and the stock runs out, you’re either managing a rapid transition to an alternative or hunting between stores.
Winner: ZIWI Peak — meaningfully wider availability and no regular stock reliability concerns.
Which is better for…
Cats with urinary issues
Feline Natural. The high moisture content when rehydrated (72%) is significantly better for cats who struggle with adequate hydration — and many cats with urinary issues need more moisture, not just dietary changes. ZIWI can work if you consistently add water, but Feline Natural’s moisture advantage is built-in.
For additional support, see our best cat food for urinary health NZ guide.
Cats with food allergies
Both equally. Both offer single-protein options across beef, lamb, chicken, and venison. Neither has a clear advantage for elimination diets. Use whichever your cat tolerates and your budget supports. See our best cat food for allergies NZ guide for broader options.
Kittens
ZIWI Peak for most owners. Both are labelled for all life stages and have protein levels appropriate for growth. ZIWI’s convenience makes appropriate portion control easier — no rehydration variables, and you won’t have the time pressure of a rehydrated bowl needing consumption within 2 hours. For a broader view, see our best kitten food NZ guide.
Senior cats
ZIWI Peak. Its higher fat (24% DM) provides energy for older cats who may struggle to maintain weight, and the convenience suits less demanding routines. More importantly: for senior cats beginning to show kidney concerns, neither food is ideal (both are high-protein), but ZIWI’s lower protein of the two is a marginal advantage. Consult your vet. See our best senior cat food NZ guide for age-appropriate options.
Indoor or overweight cats
ZIWI Peak with portion control. The higher fat content means smaller portions are needed — and the ease of measuring means less risk of overfeeding. Feline Natural’s caloric density when rehydrated can be harder to portion correctly. See our best indoor cat food NZ guide for calorie-appropriate options.
Busy households or auto-feeder users
ZIWI Peak — no contest. Auto-feeder compatible, no prep, no time pressure on the bowl, no cat-sitter briefing required.
Raw feeding enthusiasts
Feline Natural. If raw feeding philosophy drives your decision — minimal processing, high moisture, whole prey with blood and bone ratios reflecting natural prey — Feline Natural is as close as you’ll get in a shelf-stable freeze-dried format. ZIWI is air-dried, which is further from raw than freeze-dried.
Bottom line: Decision Framework
Choose ZIWI Peak if:
- You want a premium daily food without any preparation
- You use or want to use an auto-feeder
- Convenience matters — busy mornings, travel, cat-sitters
- Your cat is an average-activity adult, indoor, overweight, or senior
- You want wide availability across NZ without worrying about stock
- Every dollar matters — ZIWI is roughly half the daily cost at exclusive feeding
Choose Feline Natural if:
- Raw feeding philosophy matters and you want the closest shelf-stable equivalent
- Your cat has a history of urinary issues and needs maximum moisture
- You’re committed to 3–5 minutes of daily prep and planning around stock availability
- You want the highest protein density available in an NZ-made freeze-dried product
- Your cat is highly active, needs weight gain, or simply refuses anything else
Do what most NZ owners do:
Buy ZIWI Peak as a daily diet — or use either as a topper over quality kibble at a fraction of the exclusive-feeding cost. At 20% of the diet, either brand improves nutritional quality substantially without the budget hit of full replacement. For budget-friendly base kibble, see our best cat food NZ guide.
